One might say that the medical profession is in the DNA of Douglas Miyazaki, MD, FACOG. "My father was an OB/GYN in this area and developed a surgical instrument called the Miya Hook which supports the vagina if it prolapses, or sags down too much," he explained. "My older brother is an OB/GYN physician practicing in California, and my older sister is an optometrist in California."
While those family connections might have influenced Dr. Miyazaki's career path, he says the real reason he became a doctor was more personal. "I really like the relationships you develop as a physician," he said. "It's very exciting to be on the forefront of knowledge and to be able to give the very best care to my patients."
Dr. Miyazaki says he enjoys the variety provided by the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology. "This specialty has so many aspects: infertility, high- and low-risk pregnancy care, gynecology, surgery and oncology to name a few," he noted. "I have gradually focused on urogynecology or female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. This specializes on disorders of pelvic support and incontinence."
As a founding partner at Novant Health WomanCare, Dr. Miyazaki has had nearly two decades at this practice to develop that specialty, and to develop relationships with both his patients and coworkers. "All of my physician partners and practitioners are excellent and the staff is second to none," he said. "We all have a lot of pride at taking ownership of our patients' issues and see them through to the end. We believe that doing the right thing with compassion and understanding is the best way to care for people."
Dr. Miyazaki is Board Certified and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He volunteers his time to serve on many boards and executive committees, including the Forsyth Infant Mortality Reduction Coalition and the Forsyth-Stokes-Davie County Medical Society.
Outside of work, Dr. Miyazaki enjoys spending time with Beverly, his wife of more than 20 years, and their three children, Noah, Whitney and Ryan, when they are not away at college. "We all love the outdoors, and visit the beach or going skiing or fishing whenever we can," he said.
When he has time to himself, Dr. Miyazaki enjoys practicing martial arts. "I am a fifth-degree black belt and a taekwondo master," he shared.
