When Jaleema Speaks, MD, was six years old, she had an unusal request for her pediatrician. "I asked to look at my blood under the microscope," she recalled. "I really loved science from an early age."
Dr. Speaks turned that love of science into a career when she decided to attend medical school. Her desire to focus on women's care was encouraged by a family of strong women. "My mother wore so many hats," she said. "She was always a working mom and was so computer savvy. And she still found time to be the world's best cook!
"My grandmother taught lamaze and yoga from her screened-in porch, so I was around pregnant women from very early on!"
Dr. Speaks says she made the right career choice. "Delivering babies never gets boring," she said, "and it's the absolute best reason to be awake in the middle of the night!"
When she's not working or on call for middle-of-the-night deliveries, Dr. Speaks enjoys spending time with her family. "I married my high school sweetheart," she said. "Together, we have a son and a daughter."
