As a child, Joseph M. Gobern, MD, had a front-row seat to watch the impact medical professionals can have on people's lives. "My mother was a nurse," Dr. Gobern shared. "Watching her made me want to care for and improve the health of people just as she did."
A retired colonel in the U.S. Army, Dr. Gobern had his first opportunities to serve patients while in uniform. "I became driven not only to help patients with acute needs, but to help them achieve their optimal state of wellness," Dr. Gobern explained. "Here at Novant Health WomanCare, I enjoy meeting and caring for women who are motivated towards health and wellness, and I like sharing in satisfying childbirth experiences or helping them to resolve a gynecologic concern."
Dr. Gobern specializes in the management of abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, pelvic pain and endometriosis. "I provide minimally invasive gynecologic procedures including robotic surgery that allows women to have shorter hospital stays and less blood loss, allowing them a quicker return to normal activity than after traditional surgery," he explained.
Dr. Gobern and his wife enjoy spending time with their four adult children whenever they can. "I love traveling with my family," Dr. Gobern shared. "I also enjoy reading and distance running when I have time to myself."
