Biography

While many doctors say a love of science launched their careers, Laura Ramsay, MD, FACOG says her path to medicine started with the arts. "I had a career in classical ballet with the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia," she recalled. "During that, I experienced sports medicine from a patient's perspective, and I discovered it would be a great opportunity to make a difference in people's lives."

Born and raised on her parents' farm in Waynesville, North Carolina, Dr. Ramsay returned to her home state for both undergraduate and medical school, graduating first from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and then attending East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine on a Health Professions Scholarship from the U.S. Navy.

In medical school, her first rotation was in obstetrics and gynecology. "After that, I compared everything else to that specialty," Dr. Ramsay said. "And while I have a passion for all of women's health, I am particularly interested in adolescent health, eating disorders, exercise in pregnancy and minimally invasive surgical techniques."

Dr. Ramsay completed her residency training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where she received awards for teaching as well as the Special Excellence Award for Endoscopic Procedures. She went on to serve four years of active duty service in the U.S. Navy, during which she in charge of training for all obstetrics and gynecology students at the Uniformed Services University. She has also been recognized for her work with Wounded Warriors, their families and the future physicians who serve them. Dr. Ramsay is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Ramsay is not the only member of her family in the medical field. Her husband, David Ramsay, MD, is a gastroenterologist. Together, they have a son and a daughter. "As a family, we love being outside, and taking trips to the mountains or the beach," she said. "I also enjoy staying active on my own. I do yoga, pilates and I still love dancing."
